What is Woodturning?
Woodturning is the shaping of wood, using hand held tools, on a wood lathe. Wood lathes come in all shapes and sizes, but the one I work with is a Jet 14" x 42" variable speed wood lathe. A wood lathe operates by a belt spinning a metal rod called a spindle. Then the operator attaches wood to the spindle using a variety of chucks and spur centers. Then the lathe will spin the wood at high speeds while the operator will lean hand held chisels against a tool rest and make cuts to symmetrically shape the wood into various designs and creations. Below is a video of Adam woodturning a ribbon sapele bowl with a turquoise stone inlay from start to finish.
